13 Aug 77 BFPS 1582 Open Day RAF Lossiemouth Special Postmark. Open Day RAF Lossiemouth 13th August 1977. Cover depicts 8 Squadron Shackleton AEW2{COMMA} GannetJaguar{COMMA} & Whirlwind {COMMA} RAF Lossiemouth badge. RAF Lossiemouth was opened in 1939 as a Flying Training School and handed over to Bomber Command in 1940. On 12 November 1944 617 Dambusters Squadron used RAF Lossiemouth to attack the German Battleship Tirpitz in Tronheim Fjord. At the end of the War the station was passed over to Coastal Command and then in 1946 to the Royal Navy as HMS Fulmer. In 1972 the station was returned back to the RAF and is part of Strike Command.
