My Name is Mark Bloxham, a director of Mark Bloxham Stamps Ltd, and I have been a stamp dealer for over 35 years. I started dealing stamps part-time at the age of 13 at flea markets and local fairs in the North East of England.
I quit school during my A-Levels to become a stamp dealer from a tiny local office in Whitley Bay. After many years and many fair circuits, I finally got my own shop in Newcastle upon Tyne. In 1995 I began to hunt for a word processor but ended up with a computer and scanner. This purchase turned out to be the future of my stamp dealing business. In 1996, I launched a website stocking 100 items. Three virtual, yet successful, years later I launched my first eBay account.
In the millennium I truly realised the future of stamp collecting and I became the first UK power seller on eBay in 2000 and completed a huge joint promotion at their decennial Stamp Exhibition in London. With my shop no longer justifying its costs, I closed it and turned my business into an entirely online form. Today I operate the majority of my dealings online, with the occasional show throughout the year.
Since then I have been involved heavily in the valuation and dealing of World Class Collections, including the Pickering Collection of Maltese Crosses, Great Collections such as the Forrester, Walker and Mayflower Collections.
When we recently became a Limited Company, I was worried that it would involve a lot of hard work and business restructuring. In actual fact, nothing changed except the addition of ‘Ltd’ on our name – we even have the same VAT number!
Since 2011, I have also been a Director of the Philatelic Traders Society (PTS), working closely with other overseas philatelic societies. I am also a founding director of The PTS Stamp and Coin Exhibitions Ltd, which is the company which now runs Stampex, the most important biannual European Stamp Show held in London.
