1846 (April 7th) letter registered from London to Balley (nr Doncaster) manuscript endorsements Registered and 1/- in red. Postage paid by 1d red imperforate with the 1/- registration fee paid in cash (confirmed by red Lombard Street PAID Maltese Cross type datestamp). Letter originally contained a Bank Post Bill for 85 pounds 3 shilling and 10 pence. The Doncaster Date stamp was set to red 1864 instead of 1846 in Error. When the registration system was first introduced in January 1841 it was a requirement that the 1/- fee be paid in cash at the Post Office with the clerk endorsing the cover with Registered and 1/- in red to denote prepayment in cash. The postage part could be paid in cash or stamps.
