The Rejected Die. This was the first Die for the Penny Black it was rejected because the engraving was too fine to transfer to the plate properly. As was customary Perkins Bacon and Co produce one example for their records which was duly hand stamped on the reverse. In 1935 Perkins Bacon and Co went out of business and its records (including this proof) were acquired by Charles and Harry Nissen and Thomas Allen. The records were subsequently transferred to the Royal Philatelic Society London where Percy de Worms organised them for publication. I know of only one other Proof from the Perkins Bacon and Co Archive in Private Hands which is a DP25 (an Old Original). The Proof is on India Paper mounted on card. Ex Perkins Bacon Archives and Ex Tony Wicks Gold Medal Collection.
