KGVI 1940 Thomas Todd (publisher of Stamp Magazine) 1d Scarlet WAR TAX ESSAY

M/M. In early 1940 Mr Thomas Todd (publisher of Stamp Magazine) and Hugh Valancy (of Stamp Collecting) with aid of a Fleet Street printer overprinted current GB stamps with HALFPENNY POSTAGE/HALFPENNY WAR-TAX in Black. They then lobbied for the introduction as Many Commonwealth countries had done in the First World War (the UK didnt).Although there was National Press coverage the GPO flatly rejected the idea.
